NCAA BASKETBALL MATCHUPS FOR Monday, March 31, 1997

ARIZONA (24-9) VS KENTUCKY (35-4)   9:20 PM EST 
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT INDIANAPOLIS, IN

For just the second time in NCAA history, the Wildcats will play the 
Wildcats for the men's college basketball national championship.  
Arizona, a No. 4 seed, advanced to the school's first-ever national 
title game with a stunning 66-58 upset of top-seeded North Carolina on 
Saturday.  The Wildcats got a combined 42 points from Miles Simon and 
Mike Bibby, as each stepped up in a different half of play.  Simon 
scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, and Bibby added 
17 of his 20 in the final 20 minutes to help Arizona knock off a No. 1 
seed for the second time in three games.  Arizona now must beat three 
No. 1 seeds in four games to win the national championship, while 
Kentucky attempts to become just the second repeat champion since 1973 
after knocking off Minnesota, 78-69.  The defending national champions 
got 19 points from Ron Mercer and 13 from Anthony Epps against the 
Golden Gophers and won despite shooting only 38 percent from the field 
and getting outrebounded, 43-31.  Both teams play outstanding defense, 
with Arizona holding the Tar Heels to a season-low 31 percent shooting 
from the floor and Kentucky forcing 26 Minnesota turnovers.  Arizona is 
2-0-1 against the spread in its last three games in the tourney after 
starting out 0-2, and Kentucky has covered seven of its past eight 
following a 72-66 home loss to South Carolina on March 2.
